MkvCage: movies and TV shows, one post at a time, from The Godfather to Project Hail Mary

MkvCage was built as a film blog: every film had its own post, one after another down the page, with a big light title, a round bubble in the corner, a thin meta line and a sidebar of widgets on the right. The new MkvCage keeps that shape and the look of the aThemes Hiero theme it used, measured from the archived style sheet: the dark header with its condensed capitals, the white page, the blue accents and the Top 250 list in the sidebar. Every post now ends with a Watch now button that opens the title on the official services where you live.

This guide explains how to use MkvCage and what you will find on it. The first part covers the page: the header and menu, the posts and their details, the sidebar widgets and the title pages. The second part is a tour of the catalogue: the Top 250, Hollywood films old and new, Bollywood, foreign films and TV shows. The third part is practical: subtitles, services, free and legal options, devices, the official site and staying safe.

The header

The header is a dark charcoal band. On the left, the logo shows a small blue cage of three bars around a white play button, beside the word MKVCAGE in thin, widely spaced capitals, the way the original site set its title.

Beneath it, the menu runs across the full width in tall uppercase letters: Home, List of Movies, Movies, Bollywood, Foreign, TV Shows, Top 250 and My List. The page you are on is filled with the site's blue, and the others lighten as you point at them.

On a phone, the menu folds into a blue Menu button beside the logo.

The posts

The main column of the home page is a stack of posts, one title each. Every post opens with the title and year in large, light condensed type, with a round blue bubble at the right holding the audience score, a small nod to the comment bubbles the original posts carried.

A thin meta line follows between two grey rules: the release date and the categories the title belongs to, such as Hollywood Movies, New Releases or Bollywood Movies. Then comes the poster, centred, with a soft shadow.

At the moment the posts begin with Project Hail Mary, followed by The Shawshank Redemption, Dhurandhar, Parasite, Breaking Bad and Interstellar.

The details block

Under each poster, a pale grey box with a blue edge lists the essentials: genre, runtime or number of seasons, director and stars. A short story follows in plain type.

Then comes the Watch now button, a solid blue block with its label in tall, narrow capitals, the typeface the original theme used for its buttons, and beneath it a Read more link that opens the full title page.

A final grey line closes each post with a small folder icon and the title's genres.

Older posts

At the foot of the column, an Older posts link leads to the full movie list, where every title on the site can be browsed.

The List of Movies in the menu keeps the original site's alphabetical list page, and the TV Shows page lists every series.

Together they cover the whole catalogue.

The sidebar

On a computer, a sidebar runs beside the posts, each widget under a small uppercase heading with a short blue underline. Search comes first, a plain box with a blue button.

Top 250 lists the ten highest-rated titles, numbered, with a link to the full ranking, and Categories lists every shelf with its count: Hollywood Movies, Bollywood Movies, Foreign Movies, New Releases, Classics and genres from Action to Animation. A final widget lists the help pages.

On tablets and phones, the sidebar moves below the posts.

The title page

Every film and series has its own page. At the top, the poster sits beside the title, the original title and a row of tags for HD, the type, the year, the runtime and the genres, followed by the story, a blue Watch now button and an Add to My List button.

Below, a pale blue panel titled Where to watch explains the viewing options, and a grid of facts lists the original title, the release date, the original language, the country, the runtime, the studio and the audience score.

Series pages add a list of seasons and episodes with their air dates.

The Watch now button

Press Watch now, choose your country in the panel that opens, and press it again. MkvCage sends you to the title's page on JustWatch, the independent guide to streaming services around the world.

JustWatch lists the subscriptions that include the title, the stores that rent or sell it and the free services with adverts that show it where you live.

Choose one, and the title opens in that service's app or website.

Choosing your country

The United States comes first in the country list, followed by the Philippines, India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil and Mexico.

MkvCage remembers your choice and uses it on every Watch now button.

Change it from the viewing panel at any time.

The Top 250

The Top 250 was one of the original site's most visited pages, and it has a place in the menu again. It ranks the highest-rated titles on MkvCage by audience score, counting only those rated by at least five hundred people.

The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather and The Godfather Part II sit near the top, with Schindler's List, The Dark Knight and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King close behind.

The Top 250 guide explains how it works, and the Top 250 widget in the sidebar shows the first ten.

The Godfather films

The Godfather follows the Corleone family and Michael's transformation from reluctant son to ruthless head of the family, and The Godfather Part II tells two stories at once: Michael's rule and the young Vito's rise in New York.

Francis Ford Coppola's two films are regularly named among the greatest ever made, and they are best watched together over a weekend.

Both sit in the Classics category.

The 1990s

The 1990s fill a large part of the Top 250. Pulp Fiction weaves Los Angeles crime stories together, GoodFellas follows a young man's life in the mob, and Fight Club follows an insomniac drawn into an underground club.

The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en are gripping thrillers, Forrest Gump and The Green Mile moving dramas, and Saving Private Ryan one of the most powerful war films ever made.

The Matrix, American History X, The Lion King and Léon: The Professional complete a remarkable decade.

Classics

The Classics category holds films from before 1990. Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back began the most famous saga in cinema, Alien set a new standard for science fiction horror, and The Shining for psychological horror.

Back to the Future is a time-travel comedy that audiences return to again and again, and Dead Poets Society a moving story of a teacher who inspires his students.

These films have been restored in HD and look better today than on their first release.

Hollywood today

The Hollywood Movies category holds the films audiences are watching now. Project Hail Mary, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are among the most anticipated films of 2026.

Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zootopia 2 and War of the Worlds were among the biggest films of 2025, and The Mandalorian and Grogu brings Star Wars back to cinemas.

The New Releases category gathers every title from 2025 onward.

Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan's films are some of the most admired on the site. Memento tells its story backwards, The Prestige follows two rival magicians, and The Dark Knight reinvented the superhero film.

Inception and Interstellar are ambitious science fiction on an epic scale.

Searching his name gathers every film.

Superheroes

The superhero films are among the most popular on MkvCage. The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame form the heart of the Marvel saga, and Spider-Man, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follow the web-slinger.

Joker and The Batman explore Gotham, and Deadpool & Wolverine offers comedy for grown-ups.

The Action category gathers them all.

Fantasy sagas

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, remains the benchmark for fantasy on screen.

The Harry Potter films, from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, follow the young wizard's first years at Hogwarts.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Avatar complete a shelf of great adventures.

War films

The War category holds some of the most powerful films on the site. Saving Private Ryan opens with a landing on Omaha Beach that changed how war is shown on screen, and Hacksaw Ridge follows a medic who refused to carry a weapon.

Schindler's List tells of a businessman who saved more than a thousand lives, and Inglourious Basterds is Quentin Tarantino's wartime fantasy.

These films are best watched with time to reflect afterwards.

Bollywood

Bollywood Movies has its own place in the menu, as it did on the original site. Dhurandhar, Jawan, KILL and War are among the newest Hindi hits.

3 Idiots, Dangal, PK and Like Stars on Earth are loved across India and beyond, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Om Shanti Om and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara are favourites for a reason.

The Bollywood guide picks highlights.

Foreign films

Foreign Movies was the third movie category on the original site. Parasite became the first film in a language other than English to win the Oscar for best picture, and City of God follows two boys growing up in a Rio favela.

Life Is Beautiful and The Intouchables are warm, moving stories from Italy and France, and Léon: The Professional is a French-made thriller set in New York.

From Japan come Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Your Name., A Silent Voice: The Movie and Perfect Blue. The foreign films guide has more.

TV Shows

TV Shows has its own place in the menu, as it did on the original site. The category gathers English-language series audiences rate and watch most, from long-running favourites to new hits.

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are two of the most admired dramas ever made, Peaky Blinders follows a Birmingham gang after the First World War, and Fargo tells a new crime story in each season.

Each series page lists every season and episode with its air date.

Thrillers and mysteries

Stranger Things mixes 1980s adventure and horror, Black Mirror offers self-contained stories about technology, and Westworld asks what happens when the robots of a theme park wake up.

FROM and Silo trap their characters in mysterious places, Homeland follows a CIA officer's suspicions, and Reacher a former military policeman who solves crimes his own way.

These series are made for a late-night binge.

Crime series

The Blacklist follows a master criminal who helps the FBI, The Mentalist a consultant who reads people like books, and Sons of Anarchy a motorcycle club in California.

Chicago P.D., 9-1-1 and The Rookie follow first responders, and Suits a young man working at a New York law firm.

Lucifer brings the devil himself to the Los Angeles police.

Fantasy and superheroes

House of the Dragon returns to Westeros for a war of succession, Vikings follows Ragnar Lothbrok across the North Sea, and Once Upon a Time brings fairy-tale characters to a small town in Maine.

The Boys imagines superheroes run by a corporation, and The Flash and Arrow bring DC heroes to weekly television.

Grimm, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead add supernatural drama.

Comedy series

Modern Family follows three branches of one family in a mock documentary, Brooklyn Nine-Nine the detectives of a New York precinct, and Young Sheldon the childhood of a young genius.

Ted Lasso follows an American coach managing an English football team, and Rick and Morty and Adventure Time are animated favourites.

Comedy series are ideal for an evening when you want to relax.

Modern westerns

Yellowstone follows the Dutton family and their vast Montana ranch, and Tulsa King sends a New York mobster to Oklahoma.

Both come from Taylor Sheridan and share his taste for big landscapes and bigger characters.

Subtitles

MkvCage's foreign films play in their original languages, with subtitles on every major service. Open the speech-bubble menu in the player to choose a language, and in most apps the size and colour of the text.

Hindi films usually include English subtitles, and many Hollywood films include Hindi and other dubbed tracks.

Audio description is offered on many titles, listed in the same menu.

Where to watch

Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Max, Hulu, Apple TV, Paramount+ and Peacock carry most of the titles on MkvCage. Classics often rent or sell on Apple TV, Google TV and Prime Video, and sometimes appear on free services.

Bollywood films stream on Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar, and foreign films on Netflix, MUBI and specialist services.

The guide to services compares them, and the Watch now button lists every option for your country.

Picture quality

Services stream in HD at 720p or 1080p, and many films in 4K with HDR on premium plans, adjusting quality to match your connection.

Classics such as The Godfather and Star Wars have been restored in 4K, and modern spectacles such as Avatar: The Way of Water were made with it in mind.

A connection of about 5 megabits a second suits HD, and about 25 suits 4K.

Phones and televisions

MkvCage works in any browser. On a phone, the menu folds into a blue Menu button, the posts fill the width of the screen and the sidebar moves below them.

To watch on a television, choose a title on your phone and open it in the same service's app on the television, or cast it with Chromecast or AirPlay.

The apps and devices guide has more.

Free and legal

Many films can be watched free and legally. Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex and YouTube's free films carry thousands of titles with adverts, including many classics.

Kanopy and Hoopla give many library members free access, and many subscription services offer a free first week or month.

The Watch now button marks free options for your country. The free and legal guide gathers more.

My List

My List keeps the titles you want to watch. Press Add to My List on any title page, and it joins the My List page.

A good project is to work through the Top 250: add the films you have yet to see and tick them off one by one.

The list lives in your browser and works right away. Export My List saves a small file; Import a saved copy merges it on another device. The My List guide has more.

More ways to find titles

The finding titles guide explains search, the List of Movies, the categories and the Top 250, and the how to watch guide walks through each step from a post to the player.

The collections page gathers every category in one place.

The official MkvCage

MkvCage has one fixed address, shown in your browser, and its own writing and title pages: the dark header with its thin capitals, the white column of posts with blue score bubbles and the sidebar of widgets.

Bookmark it or add it to your home screen, and it opens with your country and My List in place. Every Watch now button leads to JustWatch and official services.

The official site and site status guides explain what to check.

Staying safe

MkvCage shows posters, stories and links to JustWatch and official services, and every button goes exactly where its label says.

Official services keep your devices safe and support the people who make the films and shows you enjoy. Keep your browser and devices updated for security fixes and better playback.

Elsewhere, leave pages that open windows on their own, ask you to install a player or ask for card details to watch something free. The safety guide has a short checklist.

How titles are chosen

MkvCage's catalogue follows the original site's categories: Hollywood films, new and classic; Bollywood films; foreign films; TV shows; and the Top 250 of the best-rated titles of all time.

Titles are chosen by audience and score, with new releases added as they reach home screens.

MkvCage is a site for a general audience. Titles sold on explicit sexual content are left out, so every category is comfortable to browse with anyone nearby.

Where the information comes from

Posters, titles, stories, genres, runtimes, casts, directors, episodes and audience scores come from TMDB, the community film and television database used around the world.

Where to watch comes from JustWatch, updated daily for every country. The help pages and this guide are written for MkvCage.

The catalogue is refreshed regularly.

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption follows Andy Dufresne, a banker sent to prison for a murder he insists he is innocent of, and his friendship with Red over twenty years behind the walls of Shawshank.

It opened quietly in 1994 and grew into one of the most loved films ever made, thanks to audiences who discovered it at home.

It sits near the top of the Top 250.

Schindler's List

Schindler's List tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved more than a thousand Jewish workers during the Holocaust. Steven Spielberg filmed it almost entirely in black and white.

It is one of the most important films ever made, best watched with time to reflect afterwards.

Parasite

Parasite follows a poor family who, one by one, find work in a wealthy household, until a discovery in the basement changes everything. Bong Joon Ho's film is funny, tense and shocking by turns.

It won the Palme d'Or and the Oscar for best picture, the first film in a language other than English to do so.

It leads the Foreign Movies category.

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad follows Walter White, a chemistry teacher who becomes a methamphetamine manufacturer after a cancer diagnosis. Across five seasons, it charts his transformation into someone his family barely recognises.

It is regularly named the best television drama ever made, and it leads the TV Shows category.

Interstellar

Interstellar follows a former pilot who leaves his children on a dying Earth to search for a new home for humanity through a wormhole near Saturn.

Its images of a black hole were created with the help of physicists, and Hans Zimmer's organ score is one of the most memorable of its decade.

It rewards a large screen and a good sound system.

Spirited Away

Spirited Away follows Chihiro, a ten-year-old girl who wanders into a world of spirits and must work in a bathhouse to free her parents. Hayao Miyazaki's film won the Oscar for best animated feature.

It is one of the most beloved films of any kind, and it suits the whole family.

Dhurandhar

Dhurandhar follows an Indian operative who spends years undercover in Karachi's underworld, working his way into a dangerous network. It became one of the defining Hindi films of 2025.

It is intense and violent, made for grown-ups, and it leads the Bollywood Movies category.

City of God

City of God follows two boys growing up in a Rio de Janeiro favela over two decades, one who becomes a photographer and one who becomes a feared gang leader.

Its energy and storytelling made it one of the most admired films of the 2000s, from any country.

The Intouchables

The Intouchables follows the friendship between a wealthy man paralysed in an accident and the young man from the suburbs he hires as his carer.

Based on a true story, it became one of the most successful French films ever, warm and funny from start to finish.

Memento

Memento follows a man with short-term memory loss hunting his wife's killer, with the story told backwards in short scenes so that the audience shares his confusion.

It made Christopher Nolan's name and rewards a second viewing.

The Prestige

The Prestige follows two rival magicians in Victorian London whose competition turns into obsession. Every scene hides a clue to its final trick.

It is one of the most satisfying puzzle films ever made.

Green Book

Green Book follows a working-class bouncer hired to drive a celebrated pianist on a concert tour through the American South in 1962.

It won the Oscar for best picture and is a warm story of an unlikely friendship.

Your first visit

If this is your first visit, read the first few posts on the home page: they mix a new release, an all-time classic, a Bollywood hit, a foreign film and a TV series, a sample of everything the site holds.

Then open the Top 250 widget in the sidebar and pick one film you have yet to see.

Add a few titles to My List as you go, and you will have a plan for the week.

Marathons

Some stories are made for a marathon. The Lord of the Rings trilogy fills a long weekend, the Godfather films an evening each, and the first Harry Potter films a few nights.

For series, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul reward a few weeks, while Black Mirror can be watched one story at a time in any order.

Add the whole marathon to My List before you begin.

Family evenings

For family evenings, animated films are the place to start. Coco, Inside Out, WALL·E, The Wild Robot and Despicable Me suit every age, and The Lion King and Spirited Away are classics for children and parents alike.

Back to the Future and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone suit older children.

Services add age ratings and parental controls you can set in each profile.

Date night

For a date night, pick something you will both enjoy. Forrest Gump is warm and moving, Your Name. a romantic anime that works for newcomers, and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara a joyful Bollywood road trip.

For a thriller that sparks conversation, try Se7en or Shutter Island; for laughs, an episode or two of Modern Family.

Reading the scores

The blue bubble on every post shows the TMDB audience score. Scores above eight mark the titles audiences love most, and the Top 250 is made almost entirely of them.

The number of votes matters as much as the score. Classics rated by tens of thousands of viewers have settled scores, while new releases may move as more people watch.

Scores are a helpful guide rather than a final word, and some of the most enjoyable titles sit just below the top.

Worth watching again

Many titles reward a second viewing. Memento, The Prestige, Fight Club and Shutter Island reveal new details once you know how they end.

Classics such as The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption often feel richer years later.

Keep a small shelf of favourites in My List for rewatching.

Weeknight viewing

On a busy weeknight, a series episode often fits best. Modern Family and Brooklyn Nine-Nine run about twenty minutes, and Black Mirror tells a complete story in each episode.

For films, the runtime shown in each post helps you choose; Whiplash and Coco are among the shorter ones.

Save the three-hour epics for the weekend.

Horror and suspense

For a horror night, The Shining follows a family snowed in at a haunted hotel, Alien a crew hunted aboard their own ship, and The Conjuring investigators in a haunted farmhouse.

Perfect Blue is a psychological thriller from Japan, and Evil Dead Burn continues a famous horror series.

Watch these with the lights on.

Science fiction

Science fiction runs through the Top 250. Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back began the most famous saga in cinema, The Matrix changed action films, and Interstellar and Inception brought big ideas to big audiences.

Blade Runner 2049, Dune and Avatar: The Way of Water are modern spectacles, and Project Hail Mary arrives in 2026.

The Sci-Fi category gathers them all.

Animation

The Animation category holds some of the most loved films on the site. Pixar's Coco, Inside Out and WALL·E are moving stories for every age, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse changed what animated films could look like.

Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle are timeless, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle became one of the biggest anime films ever.

Coraline and The Wild Robot complete a varied shelf.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction weaves together the stories of two hitmen, a boxer, a gangster's wife and a pair of diner robbers across one Los Angeles weekend, told out of order.

Quentin Tarantino's dialogue, soundtrack and structure made it one of the most influential films of the 1990s.

GoodFellas

GoodFellas follows Henry Hill from his childhood fascination with gangsters to his life inside the mob and his eventual fall. Martin Scorsese's direction and Ray Liotta's narration make it endlessly watchable.

It pairs naturally with the Godfather films on a crime weekend.

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump follows a kind-hearted man from Alabama whose simple view of the world carries him through decades of American history, from Vietnam to Watergate.

Tom Hanks won the Oscar, and the film remains one of the most loved of its decade.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan follows a squad of American soldiers sent behind enemy lines after D-Day to find a paratrooper whose brothers have all been killed.

Its opening landing on Omaha Beach is one of the most intense scenes in cinema.

The Matrix

The Matrix follows a computer hacker who discovers that the world around him is a simulation, and joins a rebellion to free humanity.

Its bullet-time action and ideas changed science fiction in 1999, and it still looks remarkable today.

The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs follows an FBI trainee who seeks the help of an imprisoned psychiatrist and killer to catch another murderer.

It won the five main Oscars, including best picture, and remains one of the great thrillers.

3 Idiots

3 Idiots follows three engineering students and their free-spirited friend who questions everything about the way they are taught. Aamir Khan's comedy became one of the most loved Hindi films ever.

It is funny, moving and ideal for a family evening.

The Lunchbox

The Lunchbox follows a lonely widower in Mumbai who receives a lunchbox meant for someone else, and begins exchanging notes with the young wife who cooked it.

It is a gentle, beautifully observed love story, and one of the most admired Indian films abroad.

Life Is Beautiful

Roberto Benigni's film won three Oscars and is both funny and heartbreaking.

Your Name.

Your Name. follows two teenagers, a boy in Tokyo and a girl in the countryside, who mysteriously begin to swap bodies.

Makoto Shinkai's film became a worldwide hit, with luminous skies and a story that turns in unexpected directions.

Sons of Anarchy and Homeland

Sons of Anarchy follows a motorcycle club in California and the young man torn between his loyalty to it and his conscience, and Homeland follows a CIA officer who suspects a returning prisoner of war.

Both are intense dramas that reward watching from the first season.

Modern Family and Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Modern Family follows three branches of the Pritchett family in a mock documentary, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine the detectives of a New York police precinct.

Both are warm, quick comedies, ideal for a single episode before bed.

In short

Read the posts on the home page, check the Top 250 widget, browse the categories, and press Watch now on any post to reach the services in your country.

Keep titles in My List, choose your country once, and the help pages cover every step from the Top 250 to staying safe.

The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back follows Luke Skywalker's training with Yoda while Han Solo and Leia flee the Empire, and ends with one of the most famous revelations in film history.

Many fans consider it the finest Star Wars film, and it pairs naturally with Star Wars for a classic double bill.

The Shining

The Shining follows a writer who takes a job as winter caretaker of an isolated mountain hotel with his wife and son, and slowly loses his grip on reality.

Stanley Kubrick's film is full of images that have become part of popular culture, and it is best watched late at night.

Back to the Future

Back to the Future sends teenager Marty McFly thirty years into the past in a time-travelling DeLorean, where he must make sure his parents fall in love.

It is one of the most perfectly constructed comedies ever made, ideal for a family evening.

Dead Poets Society

Dead Poets Society follows an English teacher at a strict boys' school who inspires his students to think for themselves and seize the day.
